Josef Schmid joins GSK Stockmann Munich as partner

GSK Stockmann was able to win a career changer, the former Second Mayor of Bavaria’s capital, Munich Josef Schmid (49) for its Projects & Public Sector team. The lawyer who also holds a degree in Business Administration is going to start as an Equity Partner at our Munich office at the beginning of November. Getting him on board is another consistent step towards a stronger sectoral focus at GSK.

After receiving his degrees in law and business administration, Josef Schmid first started as a freelance lawyer for three years. He then worked for several renowned corporate law firms until 2014. As he took off in the professional world, Josef Schmid also set out on his political career – first as honorary city council in 2002 and then in 2007 as chairman of the Munich city council CSU faction. In 2014, he became the Second Mayor of the state capital and also Head of the Department of Labor and Economic Development. After the recent state elections in Bavaria, he passed on the duties as Second Mayor and switched to the Bavarian state parliament as an MP. On the side, he is going to resume his work as a lawyer.

Josef Schmid is an expert in complex urban development and building projects as well as in community-owned companies. As a lawyer, he has also worked for banks, financial service providers and companies in the automotive and mobility sector.

“With Josef Schmid, a recognized expert and an authority in our core markets is joining us. His experience as business mayor complements our profile perfectly. We are very happy to have the opportunity to further expand our growth strategy with Mr. Schmid,” said Dr. Mark Butt, representative of the Projects and Public Sector Practice Area at GSK Stockmann.

Josef Schmid himself adds, “I am delighted to join GSK Stockmann and especially the Projects & Public Sector team. As one of the most renowned law firms, GSK offers me ideal conditions in that field, and a great opportunity to work as a lawyer again while also fulfilling my political mandate.”

By taking on Josef Schmid, GSK Stockmann seeks to further strengthen its strong market position in the consulting practice targeting real estate owners, investors, real estate developers, project developers and community-owned companies. Additionally, his long-term experience and personal network also offer various cross selling opportunities for all of the firm’s fields, but especially for GSK’s Real Estate, Financial Services and Automotive & Mobility Sectors that are highly relevant to the firm.

With Josef Schmid, GSK Stockmann now has 58 Equity Partners and the Projects & Public Sector team now consists of 58 lawyers.
