GSK Update: The new temporary part-time model

The new law on temporary part-time work (“Brückenteilzeit”) has been in force since January 1, 2019. Employees are now entitled to a temporary reduction of their working hours. The new law allows employees to work part-time for a period of one to a maximum of five years and to return to their full-time position after this period expires.

Sec. 8 of the Part-Time and Limited Term Employment Act (Teilzeit- und Befristungsgesetz) – which remains in force – previously contained an entitlement to part-time work but it did not stipulate the return to full time. Under this provision, employees were only entitled to a reduction in working hours. Being able to returning to working full time was uncertain.

Our current GSK Update offers an overview of the existing part-time provisions and the new law on temporary part-time work.
