GSK Stockmann + Kollegen bolsters its corporate and M&A practice with lateral hire from K&L Gates

The corporate and M&A practice of GSK Stockmann + Kollegen is growing with the hire of another lateral partner, further advancing its focus on sectors and areas of expertise. As of June 1, 2016, the Berlin office will be bolstered by a new equity partner, Corporate/M&A lawyer Dr. Thomas Derlin (42). He joins from K&L Gates’ Berlin office, for which he worked for more than six years, most recently as a partner.

Dr. Thomas Derlin advises German and international clients, with his primary focus in the areas of M&A, venture capital, capital markets and corporate law. Among his clients are many technology companies, in particular, companies from the IT, Internet, FinTech, and railway technology sector. He provides advice to both investors as well as to companies, including to start-ups in young growth industries.
“With his advisory services and client portfolio, Thomas Derlin is in every respect a very welcome addition to GSK’s corporate and M&A practice area”, comments Dr. Michael Stobbe, spokesperson of the corporate practice of GSK Stockmann + Kollegen. “We are looking forward to have such an experienced lawyer with international focus join our group”.
Beyond providing advice in the context of typical M&A transactions, Thomas Derlin is specialised in joint ventures and cooperations, in particular in the context of technology projects. As to the area of venture capital and investment business, he regularly provides advice on the financing of young companies as well as on exits.
Moreover, Dr. Stobbe adds: “With his industry focus, Thomas Derlin complements ideally the strategy set by GSK, which is to focus on selected sectors. His clients from the area of venture capital, in particular in the FinTech sector and in railway technology, are an excellent fit for our sector groups Financial Services and Automotive & Mobility.”

Thomas Derlin’s key activities contain high cross selling potential and a multitude of synergies with respect to GSK’s other advisory services: “We are expecting an ongoing inclusion of our expertise in tax law, IP/IT, employment law, antitrust law, compliance, and public procurement law”, comments Dr. Olaf Schmechel, co-managing partner of GSK Stockmann + Kollegen. “Furthermore, Thomas Derlin has access to institutional real estate market participants and investors. This provides the chance, in addition to GSK’s solid background in this area, to win new business”.

Dr. Thomas Derlin himself also has an extremely positive outlook into the future: “Professionally and personally, GSK is another step forward for me and it is also, internationally, by means of the close involvement with the Broadlaw Group, an ex-cellent platform for the further development of my advisory practice and for the comprehensive support for my clients. I am very much looking forward to cooperating with the colleagues at GSK and also and in particular with the PE/VC and capital markets law colleagues in Luxembourg”.
